Rounding out the Flat Earth

Rounding out the Flat Earth

I am told that the map you see below is the “definitive” flat Earth map. Whether or not that is true, for the purpose of the points I will be making, it will suffice. This is not intended to be a full blown dive into this argument, rather, I offer three points that are being made through simple, and personal, observation.

The somewhat round and red circle that you see on the map represents the equator. For the round Earth heretics, section “A” would be considered the southern hemisphere, while section “B” would be considered the northern hemisphere. Please refer to it in order to have a visual understanding of the points being made.

Point 1

I have always been a sky enthusiast. I own a telescope that is literally as tall as I am, and as wide as I was many years ago. When I am speaking to people who are not as sky savvy, I usually use the Big Dipper to show them how to find the North Star from anywhere in the country. And every clear night, the North Star is there, in the same place, without moving, during any hour in the night or year that I look up. Every person living in “B” (refer to your map) can see the North Star, like I can, any night of the year. The people living in “A” are not able to see the North Star, ever. When they look look up, they can see a constellation known as the Southern Cross or the hazy patch of light known as the Large Magellanic Cloud (the closest galaxy to our own Milky Way). I can see neither, in fact, nobody living in “B” can ever see them. If the Earth is flat, why is it that only those in the center of the map (or “B”) can see the North Star while only those living in “A” can see the Southern Cross?

Point 2

Here in Kentucky, USA (“B”) we will have temperatures above 90° F (32.2° C) during July, yet in southern Australia, Africa and Asia (“A”) they might get snow during these same months. While an explanation for this drastic difference is easily understood using the global model of the Earth, there is no explanation as to why this would be the case using the flat Earth model. And there is no slight of hand in proving this. Because of the internet and social media, we all have friends all over the world. I can video call a friend at a beach on the Gold Coast of Australia where he might be enjoying an 85° day, while I am standing in a foot of snow battling 20° temperatures in central Kentucky. This same example works when comparing my snow filled day to the islands off of the Asian mainland and beaches in South Africa.

Point 3

Growing up in New Jersey it was always depressing when, on December 21st to pick a day, sundown is at 4:36 PM. In Kentucky we are on the same time zone, yet the sun doesn’t set until an hour after it does on the Jersey Shore. The point is, the Earth must be rotating or the sun must be moving. But if the sun is moving (please refer to the image) then if the sun is moving from left the right, shouldn’t the sun go down at the same time in both New Jersey and Washington state or even Alaska? Again, using video call technology, I know I can be in the dark in New Jersey and call a friend who is sitting in the sun for 3 more hours in Washington or Oregon. If the layout of the image I’ve shared is incorrect and we correct it by having the tip of South America facing down toward the bottom of the page, then if the sun was moving left to right (or vice versa) wouldn’t New York and London be on the same time zone? Yet they are not, we know that the sun goes down in London, 5 hours before it goes down in NYC.

Conclusion

Living in the center of the map and being able to see things in the sky that those living on the outside of the map cannot, is only explained if the Earth is a globe and there is a northern and southern hemisphere. The same goes for the changing seasons. What geological conditions can possibly exist in the flat Earth model that allow the center of the map to be in summer and the outside of the map to be in winter? It’s easily explained if the Earth is a globe that tilts as we’ve known since it was accurately shown to do so by Greek scientists in 350BC. In the same spirit, just looking at the map and knowing where it is light and where it is dark cannot work using the flat Earth model unless the sun is actually a series of spotlights that hit certain areas, and not others, at different times. That just doesn’t add up when looking at the map and understanding we can video call anyone, anywhere, and prove this “theory” to have no scientific or if you prefer, observational validity, at all!

The idea that there is a flat Earth is being led by a hyper-literal generation that cannot grasp abstract thought. Idioms in the bible like “four corners” or “ends of the Earth” are just that, idioms. They are figures of speech, non-literal phrases meant to point to something literal. An Israelite was told to tie tassels on their four corners and these non-flat people understood the meaning. Yet today, we hear the exact same expression, “four corners” in relation to the Earth, and it is taken literally to mean the Earth has “corners.” And I should add, that my previously mentioned telescope (or others I have used) has allowed me to take photos of the moon and other planets and each and every one of them is indeed a globe, but the Earth is flat?

This theory is also being pushed by people who are convinced that we have been lied to by our governments, or by elites, over time. Well, I agree, we have been lied to, many times. But that doesn’t mean “everything” is a lie. So when it comes to the notion that the Earth is flat, well, if it were a math problem and you’re old enough to remember Al Gore running for President… that math problem would be considered “Fuzzy Math!”

Lastly, and perhaps most important, I don’t care what shape the Earth is. It could be a goo filled octagon for all I care, it should NEVER be a source of division among the people who declare the God of the Bible to be their God. Nothing even remotely hints that geography plays ANY role at all in salvation or being part of the family of God. It’s a non-factor regarding how we are to walk and interact with Him or those around us. People are using the shape of the Earth to divide from one another. I have to say, I see that as not only sin, but I’d argue that God hates that according to Proverbs 6:16-19.

I am assuming your questions are serious. Here is how the level and stationary earth model works. The sun is local and small. It spirals between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. Wherever it goes it takes summer. The time zones are like spokes of a wheel radiating out from the central North Pole. The sun goes around and wherever it is is high noon. Hope this helps.

    • Of course I was serious. Does that also explain how (referring to the map) those who surround us can’t see the North Star but they can? What evidence do you have if you end up using the same explanation? Thanks.

This is really good, Ken. I would love to be rich enough to travel around the earth and see for myself all those other constellations that could only be seen in the southern hemisphere and pop over to a sunny warm beach when my yard is full of snow and ice all in the same day or fly toward the western sun in the afternoon and delay the days end. Those things are all incongruent in a flat earth world. And I don’t even have to go in a space ship to observe the shape of the earth, I just have to see a lunar eclipse or a solar eclipse to see that all of those celestial bodies are spheres. I have read a number of articles and looked at videos by FE proponents. It’s seems to be primarily based on Bible verses taken too literally. My first read on the Bible is to take is as literally true but recognizing literary principles of figures of speech. My God is a rock or a strong tower is not meant to be literal. They are images that convey some partial aspect of who He is. And what He made is very good.

    • God is a rock, a fortress, Yeshua is a lamb. All that should be obvious and other similarly obvious examples like them are just missed by too many.

    Very well said, Achi.
It doesn’t need to be too scientific, but a mere logic would suffice.
And as you live in Kentucky, USA, I live in Indonesia, SE Asia, which approximately is 10-11 hours ahead of your time.
Imagine that … I’m now at 05:36:11 AM. What’s yours?
    Shalom!

It’s similar to my mind as so many other “options” in Scripture. If it doesn’t help me live and love more like Messiah than why is it taking our attention? The mandate remains the same on so many topics…. go and make disciples. Election/Freewill, Earth’s shape, how we speak His Name, baptism in the Name of Father, Son and Holy Spirit or in the Name of Jesus/Yeshua, none of these change that mandate. Our job is to unify and bring those ignorant of God’s plan towards the Kingdom. Let’s pit our differences aside and keep opinions but realize our goal is to love and obey.
That’s goal anyway. We’re all wrong in so many places especially as it is, let’s focus on building His Kingdom and let ours burn.
Thanks for the article Ken. Praying for you and those you serve often.
    You’re loved.

Wish I could edit my post above. Plenty of typos and incomplete thoughts.

You should have been a highschool teacher. I think you would have made science more engaging, and palatable.
